The hardware store Gregory Pank & Co. Ltd has been a resident of 86 Digbeth High Street for several decades with a shop residing at the address for over a century. However, due to the ill health of the owner, Derrick Howard, the shop will soon close its doors for the last time bringing over 100 years of history to an end. I visited the store during its last week of business to see if I could document this small piece of Birmingham manufacturing heritage before it was gone for good. I was very fortunate to be welcomed into the store by 80-year long friend of the owner, David Willis, and Derricks son Andy who kindly gave me an extended tour of all areas of the store. It is thought that there were originally two businesses operating in the premises, which actually inhabits 86 and 87 on the High Street. Artefacts inside the store suggest there was a bakers at number 86 and a grocers at number 87, with the ironmonger operating at the back where there was thought to be a connection to the neighbouring Ironworks Bonser & Co.
